India’s electricity sector is undergoing significant changes. Renewable energy capacity is increasing quickly, power demand continues to rise across different sectors, and the country’s generation mix is becoming more diverse. As this transformation continues, dependable power generation remains important for maintaining a stable and reliable electricity supply.
This wider energy landscape provides the context for Hindustan Power’s proposed 2×800 MW transitional power project at Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh. The proposed Phase II development has received the required environmental clearance, marking an important milestone in the project’s progress.
For a project of this size, environmental clearance establishes a framework for addressing key areas such as emissions, water consumption, land use and waste management during future stages of development. These factors are considered alongside the project’s infrastructure needs and power-generation requirements.
The proposed expansion will build upon Hindustan Power’s existing generation capacity in Anuppur. The company previously developed a 1,200 MW (2×600 MW) coal-based power plant at the location, with its two units commissioned in 2015 and 2016. Phase II is planned with two additional 800 MW units, making it a significant component of the company’s generation portfolio.
Ratul Puri, Chairman, Hindustan Power, described the Anuppur project as an important part of the company’s portfolio. “The Anuppur project represents a significant portion of our portfolio and we now aim for the timely and successful completion of Phase II that will significantly increase our overall capacity,” he said.
The importance of the project also needs to be viewed in the context of India’s changing electricity system. Solar and wind power are contributing an increasing share of electricity generation, but their output can vary depending on weather conditions and the time of day. With renewable energy continuing to expand, dependable generation can help support grid stability and meet electricity needs during periods when renewable output changes.
“The Anuppur project reflects our commitment to support India’s power infrastructure and economic growth. Reliable transitional energy continues to play a critical role in ensuring stable supply, meeting rising demand and strengthening the country’s long-term energy security,” Ratul Puri said.
Environmental factors remain an important part of developing large-scale power infrastructure. The environmental clearance granted for the proposed Phase II provides a framework through which requirements related to the environment can be incorporated as the project moves into its next stages.
The proposed Anuppur expansion comes as India continues to strengthen its electricity infrastructure alongside the rapid development of renewable energy. Its progress highlights the broader challenge for the power sector: expanding renewable generation while also maintaining a dependable electricity system. For Hindustan Power, the Anuppur project represents an effort to contribute to this balance, with environmental considerations remaining an integral part of its development.
