# Ratul Puri on Battery Storage, Investment and India's Renewable Energy Future

The growth of [**solar and wind power**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPboVB4Xp6o) is changing India's energy landscape. Renewable energy is becoming an increasingly important part of the country's electricity supply. However, adding generation capacity is only one part of the challenge. Ensuring that electricity is available when demand is high is equally important.

Solar power is generated mainly during the day, while electricity demand often remains high in the evening. Battery energy storage can help bridge this gap by storing surplus electricity and supplying it when renewable generation is lower.

“India has made considerable progress in expanding its renewable energy capacity. We must now ensure that this power is available when consumers and businesses need it,” Mr. [**Ratul Puri**](https://hp.anadeedigital.com/leadership/ratul-puri) said.

Battery storage systems can help manage this difference between generation and consumption. Apart from supplying stored electricity during evening peaks, they can support grid balancing, improve the use of existing transmission infrastructure and reduce renewable power curtailment.

The growing interest in this segment is reflected in recent capacity awards and future projections. More than 14 GW of standalone battery storage capacity was awarded through tenders during 2024-25. The installed utility-scale battery storage base stood at around 350 MW at the beginning of 2026, with annual capacity additions expected to reach 6-8 GW by 2030.

“Battery storage can help bridge the gap between when renewable power is generated and when it is needed. It will be important for managing peak demand and maintaining stability in the grid,” Mr. [**Ratul Puri**](https://ratulpuri.odoo.com/ratul-puri-s-leadership) added.

Both standalone and co-located battery storage projects will be needed to support the expansion of renewable energy. When paired with solar and wind projects, batteries can make renewable power more predictable and useful to the grid. Standalone systems can help balance electricity supply and demand, manage congestion and support grid operations.

Policy support is playing a role in improving the viability of these investments. Viability gap funding covering up to 40% of capital costs and transmission charge waivers for eligible projects until June 2028 are helping support battery storage development.

However, the growth of the sector will also depend on how effectively projects are implemented. Delays in grid connectivity, financing, equipment procurement and commissioning can affect the timely addition of capacity. Announced projects must translate into operational storage capacity for the sector to make progress.

“Building storage capacity will require a coordinated effort across project development, financing, equipment supply and grid connectivity. Timely execution will be as important as the capacity announced,” Mr. [**Ratul Puri**](https://www.devdiscourse.com/article/headlines/3851656-ratul-puri-leads-hindustan-powers-5-gw-clean-energy-drive) said.

India's renewable energy ambitions will require sustained investment across generation, transmission and storage. Solar and wind power can make a significant contribution to meeting electricity requirements, but storage will be important in making this supply more dependable.

“India has an opportunity to make renewable energy a larger and more dependable part of its electricity mix. Strong execution across generation, transmission and storage will be key to realising this opportunity,” Mr. **Ratul Puri** added.
